Mobility and flexibility are two concepts that are often used interchangeably but are actually different. Understanding this difference can help create a more precise approach to improving movement quality.
What is flexibility?
Flexibility refers to a muscle's or tissue's capacity to lengthen passively. For example, the range you can reach when stretching an area relates to flexibility.
What is mobility?
Mobility, on the other hand, refers to the range through which a joint can move under active control. In other words, it's not just about reaching that range, but being able to move within it in a controlled and strong way.
Why are both important together?
- Without flexibility, mobility can remain limited
- Without control, flexibility alone may not sufficiently contribute to functional movement quality
- Developing both together offers a more holistic approach to both everyday life and athletic performance
How is mobility work planned?
Mobility work is planned individually based on the person's current range of motion and goals. The process is followed up regularly and updated based on progress.
